Celebrate World Breastfeeding Week 2018!
Welcome to National Breastfeeding Awareness Month and World Breastfeeding Week!
August is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month in the US. The first week also coincides with World Breastfeeding Week (August 1st - 7th). World Breastfeeding Week is a celebration and annual educational campaign to advance breastfeeding as a part of good nutrition, food security and poverty reduction around the world. WBW is organized by World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), which is a global network of organizations that holds a consultative status with UNICEF and the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC).
Celebrate Your Breastfeeding Journey
For many families that have chosen to and have been able to breastfeed, this is also a week to celebrate your milestones and participate in local community celebrations. For those who have had a difficult breastfeeding journey or have willingly chosen not to breastfeed, by no means is this celebration meant to dismiss your experience or choice. Ultimately, it is always a parent's choice on what method of feeding they believe is best for their family. Sometimes difficulties arise that can throw a wrench in your original plans and we understand that. Personally, breastfeeding and bottle-feeding was a difficult journey in the beginning with each of my children. That experience was one of the motivating factors that lead me to become a postpartum doula and, in turn, now provide infant feeding support to local families. This week is an opportunity for me to reflect on the highs and lows of my own journey, while also celebrating with and supporting other families. I invite you to join me and other families across the country and world.
